Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback proclaimed July 10 – 14, 2017, Reentry Week, to highlight the evidence-based work done by staff, contract providers, volunteers, mentors, and community partners, which has led to a reduction in recidivism (returns to prison) from more than 55 percent to 35 percent. The Maryland Correctional Administrators Association recently held their annual conference in Ocean City, Maryland with a theme of “Facing Correctional Challenges.” Corizon Health was a Diamond Sponsor at the event, which brings public safety professionals together to network and learn about issues that play a significant role in the criminal justice field. Vice President of Business Development Chris Bell attended the conference, along with Vice President of Operations Bob Orrick and Regional Vice President of Operations Micki Streeter. The Leon County Jail recently received its NCCHC reaccreditation with 100 percent compliance on all 39 standards.

Sheriff Walt McNeil brought the entire corrections team – both deputies and Corizon Health staff – together to present the framed certification to site Medical Director Dr. Maria Garcia and Health Services Administrator Debbie Sellers. He then personally thanked every team member present.

“The sheriff spoke with all of our staff and thanked them while shaking their hand,” Debbie said. “The presentation was very heart felt and awesome.”

Our Kansas Department of Corrections partner has been going through the rigorous process of accreditation by the American Correctional Association, in part involving medical audits of each of the state’s nine prisons. Dr. Zaki Ajans has retired as psychiatrist at Fulton Reception and Diagnostic Center in Missouri. Dr. Ajans has served offenders in the Missouri Department of Corrections for 47 years, having been the very first psychiatrist hired by the DOC in Missouri. Through the years, Dr. Ajans has served at multiple facilities and worked with some of the most difficult and ill offenders in the state—and without a single incident. Continue reading
