Dispatch from Houston

Dispatch from HoustonCorizon Health’s Dr. Andrew J. Adler, Statewide Behavioral Health Clinical Director in our Tennessee Department of Correction Mental Health Partnership, recently was called up by the American Red Cross to assist with Houston’s recovery from Hurricane Harvey, which flooded that area of Texas.

Dr. Alder spent a week in September on “hot shot” assignments. These are teams of Emergency Medical Technicians, Licensed Practical Nurses, Registered Nurses and other healthcare professionals who visited neighborhoods impacted by the storm to perform simple health assessments, first aid and other basic medical tasks that become urgently important in desperate situations.

Although he observed some shelters shutting down in Houston, Dr. Adler reported, “The devastation was widespread and some areas of the city reveal street after street of gutted homes.”
