Second quarter SMART Employees of the Quarter announced

We are pleased to announce that Shirley Haley (left) of Wyoming Honor & Boot Camp in Newcastle, WY and Tara Weist (right) of Kinross Correctional Facility (KCF) in Kinross Charter Township, MI, are our SMART Employees of the Quarter for the second quarter of 2016. The SMART Employee of the Quarter award recognizes Corizon Health team members who consistently demonstrate excellence in their daily practice and exemplify CorizonSMART Values in all aspects of their role. Team members are nominated by their colleagues and/or supervisors for this award and winners are selected from a diverse review committee.

Nurse Practitioner Shirley Haley has been an essential member of the Corizon Health Wyoming team for the past 16 years. She possesses the drive and determination to look out for the safety of her patients, the safety of her community and the good of our Wyoming Department of Corrections (WDOC) contract. Working in corrections is not always easy and Shirley exemplifies the qualities of an effective clinical leader. She communicates in a way that is firm, fair and consistent and treats each individual with dignity and respect. Over the years, Nurse Haley has worked at all five WDOC sites by pitching in when extra support is needed. Furthermore, she quickly adapts when changes are introduced. During the past two-year transition from paper charts to an EMR, Shirley sought to become one of Wyoming’s “super users” and works with account managers to make process changes to the EMR more efficient. According to her nomination form, she is a “ball of energy that inspires everyone” to work as hard as she does.

Nurse Practitioner Tara Weist recently was featured in the Michigan State University College of Nursing’s magazine Beyond the Bedside. The piece highlighted Tara’s passion for correctional healthcare and her work with Corizon Health at KCF. Nurse Weist is a proactive nurse; continuing her education to provide the best possible care for her patients and conducting extra research to look for solutions to difficult medical cases and interventions to prevent bad outcomes. Tara contributes to cost savings for the State of Michigan and Corizon Health through volunteering at her facility and neighboring facilities to work after hours performing suturing or other procedures, reducing the number of off-site ER trips. Eliminating unnecessary ER trips also increases public safety by reducing the risks associated with transporting inmates into the community. Finally, Tara is an ambassador for Corizon Health, speaking to NP students and providers in the community about the challenging but rewarding careers to be found in correctional healthcare, and attracting new recruits to Corizon Health.

Both of these outstanding professionals demonstrate what it means to be CorizonSMART.  Please take the time to congratulate them and thank them for their contributions to the Corizon Health team and the example they set for us all.
