Indianapolis staff sponsors birthday party for prison residentsOn a recent Monday afternoon, 60 residents of the Indianapolis Reentry Educational Facility (IREF) showed up with enthusiastic appetites to a birthday party event sponsored by Corizon Health. IREF is an all-male, low-risk Indiana Department of Correction (IDOC) facility designed to provide those incarcerated with the skills necessary to successfully reintegrate into their communities upon release with the goal of lowering recidivism.

The party was the initiative of the Family Education Department (FED) at IREF, which provides a variety of programs focusing on family reunification. The FED was created to provide parenting skills to IREF fathers and offers opportunities for them to build relationships and deepen bonds with their children, as well as education and skills to help them be successful parents upon their return to the community.

Corizon Health Addiction Recovery Specialists John Stinson and Jayson Harvey barbecued chicken, while RN Karen Decker, LPN Jada Paul, Administrative Assistant Aiko Drake and Health Services Administrator (HSA) Kelly Durm helped prepare and serve up watermelon, baked beans and potato salad. And it wouldn’t be a birthday party without cake, which was served after a hearty round of the “Happy Birthday” song.

“IREF is a special place to work,” HSA Durm said. “Watching the residents move through the reentry programs, working towards preparing themselves for release and successful re-entry is uplifting. Custody and medical staff are involved with the residents by constantly educating and applauding their individual successes.”
