The award-winning team at Essex County

The Essex County Juvenile Detention Center in New Jersey, a Corizon partner, was recognized as NCCHC’s “Facility of the Year” at the opening ceremony of the 2013 NCCHC convention in Nashville on Monday, October 28th.

The prestigious award is presented annually to a facility that has demonstrated excellence in health services delivery, correctional health care professionalism and commitment to continuity of services. This year, Essex County stood out from more than 500 jails, prisons and juvenile confinement facilities to be selected as the Facility of the Year.

The Essex location houses non-adjudicated youth, primarily males, aged 10 to 18. Health staff are on-site 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The facility has been accredited since 2004 and during its last two surveys (performed every three years) has achieved 100% compliance with the NCCHC standards.

One of the most interesting programs the facility holds is a “Prom” for residents. Proposed by one of the educators as a way to motivate the residents and open their minds to a better life, Prom is now a regular event, with security, medical, mental health, social services, food service, and volunteers all pitching in.

Prom is but one example of the exceptional caring and dedication demonstrated by the staff. The programming focuses on providing services to address chronic behavioral problems and criminal behavior, and strives to divert the youth into detention alternatives, such as in-home monitoring, when appropriate. Those who remain residents receive schooling that emphasizes personal responsibility, mentoring, job training and other assistance to help them function well in society.
