A first at Wyoming Women’s Center

A first at Wyoming Women's CenterThe very first Inmate Health Fair was held at Wyoming Womens Center (WWC) on October 15, 2011. The inmate health fair was a huge success. “Keys to Unlocking Good Health: Focusing on Mental, Physical and Spiritual Wellness” was the theme. The inmate health fair was held in two time frames enabling all of the inmates to attend. During each segment there were five different health components that were presented. Each inmate was given a portfolio that had information provided by the different vendors and speakers.

There were eighteen booths set up in the gym area including, Zumba, Solutions for Life, Dog Program, Women’s Health and WDOC Wellness Group. The vendors offered a wide scope defining good health and provided the female inmates valuable information encouraging healthy living.

The inmate health fair was initiated by the Wyoming Womens Center Medical Department with a goal of offering wellness information/training to the female inmate population. A staff committee under the direction of HSA, Michelle Kremers, RN, coordinated the initiative. Amy Strauch, LPN; Shelly Kant and Carole Craig coordinated vendors. Mr. Louis Russ and Ms. Thayer coordinated the decorating of the gym area and brochures. A group of female inmates used their creativity and crafted the decorations utilized for the inmate health fair event.

The knowledge shared regarding all the components of good health was well received by the female inmate population. Different health education sessions are offered to the female inmates on a regular schedule. Ms. Kremers was excited to report it is their goal is to have the inmate health fair develop into an annual event. She expressed her appreciation to everyone who was instrumental in making this first effort a complete success.
